Graduation cakes like lots of other party items are meant to bring a moment of celebration to the party and perhaps provide a focus of attention for a while. Graduation cakes are also a lot of fun to make and will be enjoyed by everyone at the party. I think that a piece of cake is also a great favor to take home. As long as guests eat it within a day or two it will be just perfect. Indeed many will be hungry and eat it on the way home which is perfect.

In terms of the position of the graduation cake, it is important to realise just what the cake can do for you. It can be the focal point of the party for a while. It can be the opportunity to bring everyone together and have a moment of joint celebration. Everyone can gather for the cake presentation, cheer the graduate and enjoy the moment. The parents and the graduate may take the chance to say a few words and thank their guests for coming and also congratulate the graduate publicly. The cake will end up being perhaps the most photographed item at the party. As a result it is worthwhile making sure it is a great cake, very well decorated and is of enough size to be noticed in the photographs. The cake can also for part of the favors and also will hopefully be eaten by everyone at the party. So the pressure is on to create a great looking and great tasting cake.

If they like an unusual flavour then you may want to think again. The cake is being eaten by everyone. Once you have prepared the basic cake then you need to frost it and decorate it in the best way for the graduate and the party guests. The decorations should help the cake reflect the graduate and graduation. If the graduate has a particular interest, like a sport or a hobby, that could form one of the symbols. If the graduate is going on to college then their major subject could form the design or if they are starting a new career then that could form part of the subjects. There may be room for a combination of symbols. The great thing about cake decorations is you can frost the cake as you want, you can use icing and fondant to decorate the cake and you can use cake toppers to make it stand out. For example if the graduate is a keen golfer and if off to college on a golf scholarship then you could opt for a golf theme on the cake. You could frost the cake in green frosting. You could use green colored coconut for the grass, white icing for the hole and a golf flag topper, making a green.
