Party Suggestions for Holiday Catering
'Tis the season for holiday catering so I thought I would share with you some party suggestions and catering ideas I picked up at an event a couple of weeks ago given by Wolfgang Puck Catering at Sony Studios. The event was spectacular and it was a beautiful display of creative catering.
The first thing I noticed about the venue was the new parking structure and how easy it was to park. One of the party suggestions I always give my clients is to make sure parking is easy for the guests and to provide valet parking if there are parking restrictions. Nothing can be worse than going to a party and driving around looking for parking.
After I checked in (yes at this event they were taking names at the door, hello Desiree Rogers), I looked around and noticed how Puck used creative catering to enhance the décor at this event. The bars were modern in style with plexi-glass that was lit from within providing a color and a nice glow to the outdoor area.
Catering ideas that I noticed at this event included using natural elements as décor for the buffet. They took baskets and filled them with vegetables at the grilled veggie station, and at the heirloom tomato station where they served tomato soup with parmesan foam and heirloom tomato caprese salad, they used heirloom tomatoes for décor.
One of the topics I cover in Budget Bash is to use natural and easily available objects to decorate your buffet. For holiday catering, you can use as buffet décor berries, cinnamon sticks, pine cones and holiday greens to add color and texture.
Creative catering at this event is also seen in the presentation of the dessert station. Instead of just placing cookies on a platter, one of the catering ideas I picked up was to create lollipops with the cookies. Just simply bake your favorite cookie and then gently insert a smooth wooden skewer that has been cleared of any wood fragments and there you have a unique presentation for your cookie.
What is great for children as well as for adults and one of my favorite party suggestions is to include an interactive dessert station. What better way to do this than to provide either a cookie or cupcake decorating station as one of the creative catering ideas to serve desserts. At this event, they included a cupcake decorating station and it was busy all night.
A fun catering idea for your holiday catering dessert station is to design your own cupcake centerpiece by purchasing a very large cupcake mold (Bed Bath and Beyond carries them). Use the mold to make an extra large cupcake (go ahead and save time and use box cake mix and frosting) and then decorate it with peppermint candy canes. There you have an easy and fun centerpiece for your buffet (and it will taste great afterwards as well).
Finally, I have to call your attention to the easy, inexpensive yet simply elegant candle votives used as décor at this event. What Puck Catering did was use a large glass cylinder and fill it with rose petals. Then, they took a smaller glass votive with a candle and placed it inside the cylinder. Party suggestions for this decor idea for the holidays include using red petals with green votive candles.
I hope you found these party suggestions for holiday catering helpful. The few new catering ideas I picked up at this event held at Sony Studios I think are a great example of inexpensive creative catering and fit into the Budget Bash mantra: make it simple, delicious, stylish, fun & economical to all!

Holiday Entertainment for Children
This idea will work well as part of a school Valentine party or children's holiday party.1. Make or buy plain cupcakes or cookies for each person who will be attending the holiday party. Buy one or two per person and allow for extras in case of less-than-perfect quality control.2. You will also need two or three kinds of frosting, a variety of holiday sprinkles, mini M & Ms, tiny chocolate chips, toffee pieces and nuts. Choose the ones you want for the cookies or cupcakes you will be decorating.3. Be sure to bring or provide containers for the toppings and knives, paper towels, waxed paper, and a small paper plate for each child.4. Prepare a holiday cookie or cupcake menu for each child. Each child will check a box or line for kind of frosting and sprinkles desired. There should also be a space for their name. Have each child fill out the menu and collect them.5. Choose a holiday foreperson. This person is in charge of holiday decorating crews, job assignments and quality control. The child chosen should be able to work well with the other children.6. Assign children to groups of four or five. Introduce them to the foreperson and explain that they will be filling the holiday cookie or cupcake menu requests. You might want to complete one of the cookies or cupcakes as an example.7. Give the first group four or five holiday menus to complete. Each child will have a job, a kind of frosting or a specific type of sprinkle or topping to apply. Make sure they understand what their job is and that it is important to listen to the foreperson and work together.8. The foreperson will make sure each person does their job and that the assigned menus are completed successfully. Explain to the foreperson the importance of being firm but kind and encouraging. Help them understand the power of positive role-modeling.9. Have an activity planned for the groups that are waiting to decorate the holiday treats such as a puzzle, crossword or game. This will keep everyone busy and having a good time.10. When all the holiday treats are frosted and sprinkled, take each child's menu and pass out the cookies or cupcakes. It's fun to see if everyone gets the treat they ordered. Let the children know the good things you noticed while they were working together. This activity can be tailored to any holiday celebration and is fun and a good way to provide a learning experience.

How To Develop A Holiday Cookie Assembly Line
Use these ideas for the next holiday party your child has at school.
1. Figure out how many people will be attending the holiday party and make or buy plain cupcakes or cookies so each person has one or two. Make sure you allow for extras in case of those unfortunate accidents.
2. Pick up a couple of different kinds of frosting, a mixture of sprinkles, mini M & Ms, mini chocolate chips, toffee pieces and some nuts. Pick out the ones you want for the cupcakes or cookies you will be decorating.
3. Make sure you have containers for knives, paper towels, toppings, waxed paper and a paper plate for each child participating.
4. Use a cupcake or holiday cookie menu for every child. Make sure there is place for each child's name. Every child should mark the appropriate box for the kind of sprinkles and frosting they would like. Collect the menus after the children have filled them out.
5. Decide who the holiday foreperson is going to be. Being in charge of the holiday decorating crews, job assignments and quality control is the job description. Being able to work well with other children is very important for the holiday foreperson.
6. Put children in group of four to five. Explain to them they will either be filling the cupcake menu or holiday cookie requests after you introduce them to their holiday foreperson. Make an example of one completed cookie or cupcake to show them.
7. Four or five Menus should be completed by the first group. Give each child a specific job, a kind of frosting or sprinkles or topping to put on. Make sure each child understands their job and how important it is to listen to the foreperson and work as a team.
8. Making sure the assigned menus are completed and each child does their job is what the foreperson is responsible for. The foreperson needs to make sure they are being kind and encouraging but firm at the same time. Show them how to be a positive role-model.
9. The group that is waiting to decorate their cookies or cupcakes should participate in an activity such as a crossword puzzle or a game. Make sure everyone is having a good time and staying busy.
10. Take every child's menu and pass around the cupcakes or cookies when all of the holiday treats have been frosted and sprinkled. It is great to see if each child actually gets the treat they ordered. Tell the children what a good job they did.
The holiday cookie or cupcake assembly line can work with almost any holiday party and it is a great learning experience for children.
